THE Friday Boys are a disparate group of men spread across Tyneside who meet once a week - 'always on a Friday' - to talk about the arts, raise a glass to recently departed heroes and villains and, at the evening's end, down a whisky or two. The FBs have only one golden rule - talk of the working week is strictly off-limit.
Reinforced concrete very rarely works as anything other than a structural device - generally it's not an architecturally pleasing material.
ReplyDeleteBut when these two are brought together you can have something as magnificent as the Glenfinnan Viaduct - latterly famous in some boring child/wizard film nonsense.
Pedantry Corner: -
ReplyDeleteActually the Glenfinnan Viaduct is most famous for being constructed in mass concrete - not reinforced concrete.
Peterlee is the world's second ugliest structure.
ReplyDeleteWhen I worked at the Hatton Gallery at Newcastle University, I was able to look into their painting store (where paintings were stored very badly, next to the heating pipes!) and they had an ugly constructivist Pasmore work with bits were hanging off. Presumably the university has sold it to raise money for a new car park, admin block or the medical school. Or if it hasn't, it will when the government bans universities from taking in so many foreign students and charging them ridiculously high fees.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, if you're that keen to know more about Pasmore, check this out: http://www.victorpasmore.com/
