Can our boy emulate the success of the heroes of yesteryear - Pheidippides, Mike McCleod, Carlos Lopes and Terry Kelly?
And they're off - off the bus, anyhow.
No sign of nerves - just grim determination amongst some pretty grim-looking people.
A woman to the left points out the legendary Friday Boy to her husband, while at the right, some entrants, fearful of the treacherous conditions and of being abducted and eaten by the dwellers of the Stoneygate Estate in Feling, turn back before the start. Our boy is not daunted. He shall overcome.
Alone in a crowd. Our boy quietly contemplates the task ahead.
And they're off - for real this time. The 30th Great North Run and Jim's first. Good luck and Godspeed, sirrah.

I was spectating near the Robin Hood pub in Jarrow and spotted - in no particular order - Alistair Campbell, one Chuckle Brother, Sir Chris Chataway, the two women from Bucks Fizz - but missed Jim (maybe he was just moving too damn fast.)
